Activating on Critical Housing Policies
In 2024, The Alliance created new avenues for Americans to advocate for pro-housing policies. We launched the #OurHousingStory campaign to spotlight hundreds of personal stories about how the housing crisis has affected individuals and families across the country. The campaign urged Congress to prioritize practical, bipartisan solutions to increase the availability of affordable homes and rentals.
We will continue to keep pressure on policymakers until meaningful action is taken to make homes and rentals affordable again.

Homeownership is a Path to Build Equity – Let’s Keep it That Way
For many Americans, owning a home is their largest financial investment and a key pillar of their retirement planning. However, current tax policies are unfairly burdening homeowners—particularly those seeking to sell their homes and access their hard-earned equity.
The outdated Capital Gains exclusion on home sales and State and Local Tax deductions are eroding Americans’ ability to build and preserve wealth through homeownership. Homeownership is the cornerstone of strong communities and a key driver of generational wealth. Our tax system should support homeowners, not place unnecessary burdens on them.
Let’s make restoring homeowner tax incentives a top priority for Washington in 2025.

Events to Support Renters, Buyers and Homeowners Looking to Build Wealth Through Homeownership
Over the past few months, The Alliance has partnered with local REALTOR® organizations in Montgomery, Alabama; Atlanta, Georgia; and Little Rock, Arkansas to facilitate conversations on the value of homeownership and expanding access to this critical wealth building tool.
Our events highlight the path to financial stability through homeownership, with a focus on three key areas: building generational wealth, leveraging resources to save for a down payment and protect property investments, and addressing barriers to homeownership for Black residents by advocating for policies that expand access.
Stay tuned for an event coming to a city near you!
